Welcome
to the New York section of Discount Hotel Group.
There is no one face to New York …she is definitely a fickle and ever-changing gal. One minute you can be amid slick glass skyscrapers surrounded by executives in suits, and the next you can be strolling down a quiet tree-lined street as an old man comes out of his elegant brownstone to walk his dog. And then, in a flash you can be surrounded by lofts and old warehouses amidst people with outrageously colored hair and more body piercings than you ever thought possible.
What strikes people
first when visiting New York City are the buildings
— many of them landmarks made famous in movies and
on television. |
The hot nightclub scene is ALWAYS changing here…the action at most clubs doesn't get started until 10 or 11 p.m. Be sure to check-out Time Out New York or ask the front desk people at your hotel for recommendations on where the “in” crowd is now hanging out. Cover charges can be a bit pricey for New York clubs — as are the drinks. Don't be shocked if you have to pay upwards of $10 for a glass of wine!
And finally there is traditional New York …where the mainstays of cultural entertainment can be found including opera, ballet, the symphony, and more. There is the age-old joke, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” with the response “Practice. Practice. Practice.” But you can find it on the corner of 57 th Street and Seventh Avenue . Their website offers a calendar of performances as well as the opportunity to purchase tickets online. The Salisbury Hotel and Hudson Hotel are both just a few blocks from Carnegie Hall.
If you're looking for the places where New Yorkers are shopping, head over to the Meatpacking District and Chelsea — both of which have an unusual selection of stores and boutiques. For the cool, hip crowd, Stella McCartney's and Scoop are down in the Meatpacking District (near Ninth Avenue and Little West 12 th Street) while the indoor Chelsea Market is a great place to spend a rainy day browsing among the flower market, bread shops, and other unusual boutiques and gourmet food outlets…including the unbelievable Fat Witch Brownies, Amy's Bread, and Sarabeth's. The Chelsea area around Sixth and Seventh avenues at Eighteenth Street is also home to a lot of stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond; Old Navy; the Container Store; TJ Maxx; Filene's; Burlington Coat Factory; Loehmann's; Barnes & Noble; and many others.
In New York you will find EVERY type of cuisine you could possibly ask for so why not be adventurous and sample them all! This is truly a melting pot and you will find certain cuisine centered in certain areas. The west 30s are a good place for Korean food, Chinatown of course for Chinese. The East Village has good Indian and Asian food and also offers some funky affordable cafes. If you want authentic Italian food, then be sure to head downtown to Little Italy (the Holiday Inn Downtown is nearby if you want to make that your headquarters) where you will find Italian food from simple to upscale. The restaurants offer wonderful deals and the food is absolutely incredible. But save some room for dessert…
